8:30-9:00 Light breakfast & registration

About This Event
This training is designed primarily to assist clinicians working with youth who struggle with substance use disorders. The training will focus on treatment engagement and retention strategies, drawing heavily on principles from Motivational Interviewing, Collaborative Treatment Contracting, and the Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach. The use of incentive-based interventions will also be explored.
Who Should Attend?
New clinicians to the substance misuse and/or mental health treatment field.
Established clinicians who have limited or no experience working with youth.
Note: Those who have attended this training in the past may wish to re-attend as a booster session.
Objective #1 Increase competency to engage youth with substance misuse, utilizing a Motivational Interviewing framework
Participants will:
Complete a self-assessment of current strengths & needs relative to working with youth who struggle with substance use disorder (SUD)
Role play introducing the topic of substance use during the informed consent process
Learn and role play skills consistent with the core principles of Motivational Interviewing
Objective #2 Develop skills and utilize tools from the Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (ACRA)
Participants will:
Learn about the core interventions of ACRA
Role play scenarios using “functional analysis” & “happiness scale” tools
Identify 1-2 new strategies to employ with clients on their caseloads to enhance ‘prosocial’ behaviors
Objective #3 Consider how Motivational Incentives and similar strategies can advance clinical work with youth
Participants will:
Learn about core principles of Motivational Incentives (e.g. contingency management)
Identify current opportunities and low-cost ways to integrate in practice
Identify future goals and needs related to clinical practice/youth work

CEUs pending approval for 6.5 hours of training through the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation for Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors, and Licensed Psychologists.

About the Trainer
Steven M. Chisholm, MA, is a full-time professor and addiction program coordinator of North Shore Community College’s drug and alcohol programs in Lynn, Massachusetts. He holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Lesley University. Prior to teaching, he was employed for twenty years at a large multi-site addiction treatment agency where he held many counseling, clinical supervisory, and leadership positions. His roles included oversight of the agency’s quality management department, clinical record reviews, research, grant writing, and training across their continuum. More recently, he developed and launched a Recovery Coach Training Academy. He conducts various trainings across New England related to youth prevention, Motivational Interviewing, and mindfulness-based approaches, infusing both passion and humor into his highly interactive workshops. His diverse personal interests include skiing, kayaking, photography, gardening, and tai-chi.
