Preventing Substance Misuse

CHL is committed to high quality professional development offerings in the area of alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) education. A series of offerings has been designed to provide school, community staff and employers with important current knowledge and skills related to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Professional development, ranging from staff updates to continuing education by design, are facilitated by qualified trainers who have met selection criteria requirements and competencies. Our consultants can also work with local staff to develop a long-term plan for ATOD education at their school site.

At the Center for Health and Learning, we believe that the multiple causes of substance abuse call for multiple solutions in school, community and work site settings. Our staff and seasoned consultants employ a number of strategies with a strong risk management approach.

These strategies include:

  • ATOD education of school staff, community professionals and parents to engender preventive norms and attitudes and appropriate responses within the school, the community and at home;
  • Development and implementation of school, work site and community policies and protocols;
  • Establishment of key norms in the school climate and assets in the school community to foster healthy kids and support learning;
  • Implementation of research-based ATOD education with pre-K-12 students;
  • Community-based ATOD prevention and early intervention programming with community-based coalitions, organizations and groups that serve youth inside and outside the school environment;
  • Implementation of effective support, referral and deterrence systems;
  • Development of comprehensive and coordinated prevention services and systems;
  • Evidence-based drug prevention to ensure environments that are safe, healthy, and drug-free (as per federal grant requirements in the S.1177 every Student Succeeds Act);
  • Evaluation design for assessing ATOD program development.

Backed by 20 years of experience implementing ATOD Education in Vermont, our staff and consultants provide training and technical assistance at the state and local level.

Make your school, worksite or organization, a safer, healthier place, and promote coping behaviors and help-seeking skills that keep people healthy and able to carry out early interventions when there are problems. Training focuses on current pharmacology, legal issues, development of school and worksite drug policies, chemical use, misuse and dependence and related risks; intervention and referral protocols; chemical dependency and the family; deconstructing media; asset development, effective treatment, recovery, and more.

CHL also offers trainings in research-based curricula that support ATOD education, including: Know Your Body and Michigan Model.

In addition to on-site and regional face-to-face trainings, CHL can offer Webinars, audio and electronic discussions and on-site technical assistance from its Expert Level Cadre of trainers.  Contact us at info@healthandlearning.org to discuss your training needs.
