Widening the Lens on Suicide & Culture: Virtual Clinical Training

ABOUT THE TRAINER

Tara Miller (she/her), MA, CPS, NCPS, Lamoille County Mental Health Services Psychiatric Rehab and Recovery Services Director

Tara Miller is originally from Pennsylvania and moved to Vermont last summer. She has over twenty-one years of experience in the behavioral health field in many different modalities such as residential, psych rehab, outpatient, inpatient, case management, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and program direction. She did her graduate work on the west coast in San Francisco, CA and Seattle, WA. More importantly, she is a person in recovery from a serious mental health diagnosis and uses her lived experience in way that supports and enhances her work. Tara tries to see beyond clinical implications of “illness” and focuses on person’s strengths, skills, and talents; with a focus on holistic wellness. She is passionate about the recovery moment, psych rehab, person-centered care and coming from a trauma-informed perspective.

Objectives

• Speak about ways that the medical model and traditional approaches to suicide may not work with all populations and may actually not be the most effective way of dealing with crisis
• Be able to define the BARK approach, PEACE approach, and Brave Communication as a way to re-imagine the ways that we work with people in crisis situations
• Understand and list some of the unique challenges of working with special populations
• List at least 2 other resources for dealing with crisis

• Social Workers
• Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors
